our beliefs

The following are the core beliefs of South Shelby Baptist Church based on the foundational truths taught in the Bible. All of our teaching and ministry is rooted in and flows out of these biblical doctrines.

The Bible

The Bible is the God-breathed, authoritative Word of God. It alone is the final authority in determining all doctrinal truths. In its original writing, it is inspired, infallible and inerrant.
2 Timothy 3:16-17, 2 Peter 1:19-21, Hebrews 4:12-13, Matthew 4:4, Isaiah 55:11, Romans 15:4

One God - The Trinity

There is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and co-eternal.
Genesis 1:26, Matthew 3:16-17, Matthew 28:19, Luke 1:35, Isaiah 9:6, John 1:1

Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the second person of the Trinity. On earth, Jesus was 100% God and 100% man. He is the only man ever to have lived a sinless life. He was born of a virgin, performed miracles, died on the cross for mankind and thus, atoned for our sins through the shedding of His blood. He rose from the dead on the third day according to the Scriptures, ascended to the right hand of the Father, and will return again in power and glory.
Isaiah 9:6, John 1:14, John 20:19-20, Philippians 2:5-8, 1 Timothy 2:5

Salvation

Every person is born into sin and has a sinful nature. Through Scripture, we know that the wages of sin is death. Salvation is the eternal saving work of Jesus Christ made possible through His death, burial, and resurrection. Through the confession of mouth and belief in the heart that Jesus Christ is Lord, we can receive salvation.
1 Timothy 2:3-4, Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23, Romans 10:9-10, 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, 2 Corinthians 13:5

Baptism

Following faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, the new believer is commanded by the Word of God to be baptized in water in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 3:13, Matthew 28:19, Acts 2:38

Lord's Supper

Also known as Communion, it is a unique time in the presence of God when the elements of bread and grape juice (representing the Body and Blood of the Lord Jesus Christ) are taken in remembrance of Jesus’ sacrifice on the Cross.
Matthew 26:26-29, 1 Corinthians 10:16, 1 Corinthians 11:23-25

Marriage

Marriage is the union between one man and one woman. Jesus explained the original intention and core elements of marriage, and several New Testament Epistles give explicit instructions on this union. Marriage reflects and symbolizes Christ and the Church. As such, the Church views marriage as a profound spiritual institution established by God.
Genesis 2:19-24, Leviticus 18:22, Matthew 19:4-6, Romans 1:18-27, Ephesians 5:22-33, Hebrews 13:4
